Press and hold the test/silence button to temporarily mute the alarm
If it is a hardwired alarm, switch off the circuit breaker that powers it
If it is battery-powered, remove the battery
If it has a backup battery, remove that as well
Twist the alarm off its mounting bracket if needed
Replace the alarm immediately after the issue is resolved
If the alarm is sounding because of smoke or fire, evacuate and call emergency services instead
