Turn off power to the circuit
Remove the diode from the circuit if possible
Set the multimeter to diode test mode
Connect the red probe to the anode
Connect the black probe to the cathode
Read the forward voltage drop on the display
Reverse the probes
Read the reverse value on the display
Compare the readings to the diode’s expected values
Replace the diode if it shows open in both directions or low resistance in both directions
