Place the shape you want to use as the mask above the artwork
Select both the mask shape and the artwork
Go to Object
Choose Clipping Mask
Click Make
Use the shortcut Ctrl+7 on Windows or Cmd+7 on Mac
To edit the mask, double-click the clipping group
To release the mask, go to Object
Choose Clipping Mask
Click Release
