Boil water
Pour hot water into a jar or bowl
Add borax to the water
Stir until no more borax dissolves
Add more borax if needed to make a saturated solution
Tie a string or pipe cleaner to a pencil
Suspend the string or pipe cleaner in the solution
Make sure it does not touch the sides or bottom
Leave the container undisturbed
Wait several hours or overnight
Remove the crystal when it has formed
Let the crystal dry on a paper towel
Repeat with a new solution if desired
