Rest the knee and avoid activities that worsen pain or swelling
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time, several times a day
Use a compression bandage or knee sleeve if comfortable
Elevate the leg above heart level when possible
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you
Avoid heat, alcohol, and heavy exercise in the first 48 hours
Gently move the knee to prevent stiffness if pain allows
Use crutches or a cane if walking is difficult
Seek medical care if swelling is severe, sudden, or after an injury
Seek urgent care if you cannot bear weight, have fever, redness, warmth, or the knee is deformed
Seek medical care if swelling lasts more than a few days or keeps returning
