Apply a cold compress to the lip for 10–15 minutes at a time
Keep your head elevated
Avoid touching, rubbing, or biting the lip
Rinse gently with cool water if the swelling is from irritation
Take an over-the-counter antihistamine if the swelling is from an allergic reaction and you can safely use it
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed and safe for you
Avoid spicy, salty, hot, or acidic foods and drinks
Avoid alcohol and smoking
Use a lip balm or petroleum jelly if the lip is dry or chapped
Remove any known trigger such as a new cosmetic, food, or dental product
Seek urgent medical care if you have trouble breathing, throat swelling, severe pain, fever, pus, or rapidly worsening swelling
