How to Construct a French Drain?

Call utility locating services before digging

Check local codes and permit requirements

Identify the drainage problem area and outlet point

Mark the trench path with stakes or spray paint

Measure the slope to ensure proper fall toward the outlet

Gather materials: perforated pipe, gravel, landscape fabric, fittings, and outlet components

Dig the trench along the marked path

Make the trench deep enough for the pipe and gravel layer

Shape the trench bottom with a consistent downward slope

Line the trench with landscape fabric

Add a layer of washed gravel to the bottom

Place the perforated pipe in the trench

Connect pipe sections securely

Cover the pipe with more washed gravel

Wrap the landscape fabric over the gravel

Backfill with soil or top with additional gravel as needed

Install an outlet, dry well, or daylight discharge point

Test the drain with water to confirm flow

Compact and finish the surface around the trench
