How to Construct a Fire Pit?

Check local codes, permits, and fire restrictions

Choose a level, open location away from structures, trees, and overhangs

Mark the fire pit size and shape

Dig out the area to the desired depth

Compact the base soil

Add a layer of gravel for drainage

Level the gravel base

Place the first ring of fire-rated stones or pavers

Check that the ring is level

Stack additional rings with staggered joints

Use fire-rated adhesive if appropriate for the materials

Keep the inner surface smooth and stable

Leave drainage gaps if required by the design

Build the pit to the desired height

Install a metal fire ring if using one

Fill any exterior gaps with gravel or soil

Clear away loose debris from the area

Place a nonflammable surface around the pit if needed

Test the structure for stability before use

Use only dry, approved fuel when lighting a fire
