How to Cultivate Turmeric?

Select a warm, humid location with partial shade

Choose well-drained, fertile, loamy soil with pH 6.0 to 7.5

Prepare raised beds or ridges to prevent waterlogging

Use healthy turmeric rhizomes with 1–2 buds each

Treat rhizomes with a fungicide or organic bioagent before planting

Plant rhizome pieces 5–7 cm deep

Space plants 30–45 cm apart in rows 45–60 cm apart

Plant at the beginning of the rainy season or when soil moisture is adequate

Apply well-decomposed compost or farmyard manure before planting

Mulch the beds with dry leaves, straw, or grass after planting

Water regularly to keep soil moist but not soggy

Weed the field frequently during early growth

Earth up soil around plants as they grow

Apply nitrogen-rich fertilizer in split doses if needed

Monitor for pests and diseases and remove infected plants

Harvest when leaves turn yellow and dry, usually after 7–10 months

Dig out rhizomes carefully to avoid damage

Clean harvested rhizomes and remove roots and soil

Boil or steam rhizomes if curing is required

Dry rhizomes thoroughly in the sun or a dryer

Store dried turmeric in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place
