Wash your hands and the affected area with soap and water
Fill a bowl or cup with hot water that is comfortable to the touch, not scalding
Soak the splintered area in the hot water for 10 to 15 minutes
Repeat the soak if the skin softens and the splinter becomes more visible
Use clean tweezers to grasp the exposed end of the splinter and pull it out in the same direction it entered
If the splinter is under the skin, gently press around it after soaking to help it surface
Clean the area again with soap and water after removal
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if available
Cover with a clean bandage if the area is irritated or likely to get dirty
Seek medical help if the splinter is deep, near the eye, infected, or cannot be removed easily
