Gently wash the area with mild soap and lukewarm water
Pat the skin dry with a clean towel
Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Cover with a non-stick sterile bandage
Change the dressing daily or if it becomes wet or dirty
Avoid further friction, rubbing, or pressure on the area
Wear loose, breathable clothing
Use a cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes to reduce pain or swelling
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed and if safe for you
Keep the area clean and dry
Do not pick at scabs or peel loose skin
Seek medical care if there is increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or severe pain
Seek medical care if the burn is large, deep, or not improving after a few days
