Set the multimeter to the correct function: AC voltage, DC voltage, resistance, continuity, current, or diode test
Insert the black probe into COM
Insert the red probe into the correct port for the selected measurement
Turn the dial to the appropriate range if the meter is not auto-ranging
Touch the probes to the test points
Read the display
For voltage, connect the probes in parallel with the circuit
For current, open the circuit and connect the meter in series
For resistance, continuity, and diode tests, power off the circuit first
Start with the highest range if the value is unknown
Keep fingers behind the probe guards
Remove the probes after each measurement
Turn the meter off when finished
