Stop strenuous activity and rest
Avoid lifting, pushing, or straining
Lie down flat to reduce pressure
Try gentle knee-bending or side-lying positions if comfortable
Apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth for 10–15 minutes at a time
Wear supportive clothing or a hernia support belt if previously recommended by a doctor
Take over-the-counter pain relief such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen if safe for you
Avoid constipation by drinking water and eating fiber
Do not force a bowel movement
Seek urgent medical care if pain is severe, the bulge becomes hard or stuck, or you have nausea, vomiting, fever, redness, or inability to pass stool or gas
