Turn off power to any nearby outlets or switches
Put on safety glasses, gloves, and a dust mask
Cover nearby surfaces and remove baseboards if needed
Score grout lines with a utility knife or grout saw
Break the first tile with a hammer and chisel
Pry up broken tile pieces with a putty knife or pry bar
Work from the broken tile outward
Remove remaining adhesive with a scraper or chisel
Replace any damaged underlayment if necessary
Clean the area before installing new tile
