Wash your hands thoroughly
Gather a clean catheter bag, gloves, and any needed supplies
Close the catheter tubing clamp if present
Position the new bag below bladder level
Disconnect the old bag from the catheter tubing
Avoid touching the ends of the tubing
Attach the new bag securely to the catheter tubing
Make sure the connection is tight and not leaking
Open the clamp if it was closed
Check that urine is flowing into the new bag
Secure the tubing and bag so there are no kinks or pulls
Dispose of the old bag according to medical guidance
Wash your hands again
Contact a healthcare professional if you notice pain, fever, leakage, blood, or no urine flow
