Act fast: remove clothing and blot excess paint immediately
Check paint type: water-based, oil-based, or latex/dry paint
Water-based (acrylic/washable) paint: rinse the back of the stain with cool water
Water-based: soak in cool water for 15–30 minutes, then wash as usual
Water-based: if stain remains, rub liquid laundry detergent into the stain, rest 10–15 minutes, then wash
Latex (wall paint) while wet: scrape off excess, then rinse with cool water from the back
Latex (wall paint) dry: soak in warm water with detergent, then gently scrub and wash
Oil-based paint: remove excess with a dull knife or spoon without spreading
Oil-based: blot with a rag soaked in mineral spirits/paint thinner (test inside seam first)
Oil-based: after solvent blotting, wash immediately with heavy-duty detergent
Oil-based: repeat solvent step as needed, then wash again
Dry paint (any type): gently scrape off flakes before treating
Dry paint: soften with rubbing alcohol or hair spray (test fabric first), then blot and wash
Dry paint: use a commercial stain remover for paint per label instructions
After any solvent/alcohol treatment: rinse thoroughly and wash separately from other laundry
For delicate fabrics: spot test any cleaner/solvent in an inconspicuous area first
If paint is still visible after washing: do not dry in the dryer; repeat the appropriate treatment and wash again
For stubborn stains: repeat steps until removed, then air-dry to confirm before drying fully
