Wait until the bloom has faded and petals begin to drop
Find the first set of five-leaflet leaves below the spent flower
Use clean, sharp pruners or scissors
Cut the stem just above the outward-facing five-leaflet leaf
Remove only the spent flower and a short section of stem
Cut at a slight angle
Deadhead regularly during the blooming season
Remove any weak, damaged, or diseased blooms at the same time
Dispose of removed flowers and debris
Stop deadheading late in the season if you want rose hips to form
