Gather supplies: soft cloths, mild dish soap, warm water, non-abrasive cleaning pad or soft brush, brass cleaner or vinegar-lemon solution, baking soda, salt (optional), toothbrush (optional), gloves (optional), rinse water, and dry towel
Remove dirt and dust with a dry soft cloth
Wash with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap
Rinse thoroughly with clean water
Dry completely with a soft towel
For tarnish (mild): buff with a brass-specific cleaner using a soft cloth
For tarnish (quick DIY): mix equal parts vinegar and lemon juice, apply with a soft cloth, wait 1–5 minutes, then gently rub and rinse
For heavier tarnish (baking soda method): make a paste of baking soda and a small amount of water, apply lightly with a soft cloth or non-abrasive pad, gently rub, then rinse and dry thoroughly
For crevices: use a soft toothbrush dipped in cleaner/paste, then rinse and dry
For stubborn spots: repeat gentle cleaning steps rather than scrubbing aggressively
Avoid: steel wool, harsh abrasives, strong acids not intended for brass, and soaking for long periods
After cleaning: polish with a dry soft cloth
Optional protection: apply a thin coat of brass wax or a protective sealant, then buff dry
Store in a dry place or use an anti-tarnish cloth or bag
