Stop using the toilet
Put on rubber gloves
Check the water level in the bowl
If the water is high, reduce it using a bucket or cup
Use a plunger that fully covers the drain opening
Push and pull the plunger firmly to create a seal and suction
Keep plunging until the water starts to drain
Flush once to confirm the clog is cleared
If plunging fails, try a toilet auger (closet auger)
Insert the auger into the toilet drain
Crank the handle to break up or hook the blockage
Retract the auger carefully
Flush to test
If you have a plunger that can be used with water level, ensure enough water is present to cover the plunger cup
If a clog is caused by a foreign object, use a toilet-safe tool to retrieve it only if you can see/reach it safely
If plunging and augering fail, stop and call a plumber
If overflow risk is present, turn off the toilet’s water supply valve (behind the toilet)
