Turn off the water supply to the toilet if it is close to overflowing
Remove the tank lid and lift the flapper to stop more water entering the bowl if needed
Put on rubber gloves
Try a plunger with a good seal over the drain hole
Use firm, repeated plunging motions
Flush once to check whether the blockage has cleared
If the water level stays high, stop flushing
Use a toilet auger to break up or pull out the blockage
Insert the auger into the bowl drain and crank it gently
Pull the auger back out and try flushing again
Repeat plunging and augering if necessary
Remove visible blockage from the bowl if accessible
Pour a bucket of hot water into the bowl from waist height if the water is not near the rim
Add a small amount of dish soap before plunging to help loosen the blockage
Avoid using boiling water
Avoid using chemical drain cleaners
If the toilet remains blocked, contact a plumber
