Blot up as much urine as possible with clean paper towels or a white cloth
Press firmly and repeat with fresh towels until the area is mostly dry
Mix a carpet-safe enzymatic cleaner according to the label instructions
Test the cleaner on a hidden spot first
Apply the enzymatic cleaner generously to the affected area
Let it soak for the recommended time on the product label
Blot the area again with a clean cloth
Rinse lightly with cold water if the product instructions allow it
Blot out excess moisture
Sprinkle baking soda over the area after it is damp, if desired
Let the baking soda sit until fully dry
Vacuum up the baking soda thoroughly
Repeat the enzymatic cleaner treatment if the odor remains
Avoid using steam cleaners on fresh urine stains
Avoid ammonia-based cleaners
Clean the surrounding area as well if the urine spread
Use a wet/dry vacuum if available to remove more moisture
Allow the carpet to air-dry completely
Place a fan near the area to speed drying
Check the carpet padding if the smell persists
Replace the padding if the urine has soaked through and cannot be removed
Clean the spot again if your dog returns to the same area
