Wash the area with soap and water
Apply a cold compress for 10–15 minutes, repeat as needed
Use an anti-itch product such as hydrocortisone 1% cream
Apply calamine lotion or pramoxine lotion for itch relief
Take an oral antihistamine such as cetirizine, loratadine, or fexofenadine
For more severe itching, consider diphenhydramine at night (may cause drowsiness)
Use an ice pack or cold spoon directly on the bite to reduce itching
Avoid scratching; trim nails and cover bites with clothing if needed
Keep the bite area clean and dry
If skin is broken, gently clean and cover with a sterile bandage
Seek medical care if signs of infection appear (increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, worsening pain)
Seek urgent care if there are signs of a severe allergic reaction (trouble breathing, widespread hives, facial/lip swelling, dizziness)
Prevent future bites with insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus (where appropriate)
Wear long sleeves and long pants when outdoors
Use screens on windows and doors and remove standing water around the home
