How To Use Jumper Leads?

Wear eye protection and ensure both vehicles are off.

Set both vehicles to Park (automatic) or Neutral (manual), and engage parking brakes.

Keep jumper cables away from moving parts (fans, belts) and ensure clamps do not touch each other.

Identify battery terminals: positive (+) and negative (−).

Connect one red (positive) clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.

Connect the other red (positive) clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the good battery.

Connect one black (negative) clamp to the negative (−) terminal of the good battery.

Connect the other black (negative) clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the engine block or chassis of the dead vehicle (not the dead battery’s negative terminal).

Start the engine of the good vehicle and let it run for a few minutes.

Start the engine of the dead vehicle.

If the dead vehicle doesn’t start after a few attempts, stop and reassess connections.

Once the dead vehicle is running, keep both engines running for a short period.

Remove clamps in reverse order:

Disconnect the black clamp from the unpainted metal surface on the dead vehicle.

Disconnect the black clamp from the negative (−) terminal of the good battery.

Disconnect the red clamp from the positive (+) terminal of the good battery.

Disconnect the red clamp from the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.

Leave the previously dead vehicle running and drive or run it long enough to recharge the battery.

If any clamps spark heavily, smell burning, or cables get hot, stop and check for misconnection.
