How To Use Jumper Cables?

Park both vehicles close enough for the jumper cables to reach.

Ensure both vehicles are in Park (or in gear) and the parking brake is engaged.

Turn off headlights, accessories, and ignition in both vehicles.

Identify the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on both batteries.

If batteries are in different locations, ensure cables can reach without tension or contact with moving parts.

Connect one red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.

Connect the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the good battery.

Connect one black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the good battery.

Connect the other black clamp to a metal ground on the disabled vehicle (unpainted metal engine block or chassis), away from the battery and fuel lines.

Double-check that clamps are secure and cables are not near belts, fans, or other moving parts.

Start the vehicle with the good battery and let it run.

Wait 2–5 minutes.

Attempt to start the vehicle with the dead battery.

If it doesn’t start, wait 1–2 minutes and try again once.

Once the dead vehicle starts, keep both vehicles running for 5–10 minutes.

Disconnect cables in reverse order:

Remove the black clamp from the ground on the previously dead vehicle.

Remove the black clamp from the negative (-) terminal on the good battery.

Remove the red clamp from the positive (+) terminal on the good battery.

Remove the red clamp from the positive (+) terminal on the previously dead battery.

After disconnecting, leave the previously dead vehicle running.

Drive or run the engine for 20–30 minutes to help recharge the battery.

If the battery won’t hold charge or repeatedly fails, arrange battery/charging system inspection.
