How To Replace Car Battery?

Park the car on a level surface and turn the engine off

Engage the parking brake and set the transmission to Park (or Neutral for manual)

Open the hood and locate the battery

Identify the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals

Put on safety glasses and gloves

If equipped, disable the battery disconnect switch (if present)

Loosen and remove the negative (-) terminal clamp

Move the negative cable away from the battery so it cannot contact the terminal

Loosen and remove the positive (+) terminal clamp

Disconnect any vent tube or hold-down bracket connected to the battery (if present)

Remove the battery hold-down clamp/strap and any battery tray hardware

Lift the old battery out carefully (use both hands and proper lifting technique)

Clean any corrosion from the battery tray and terminal posts using a battery terminal cleaner or wire brush

Ensure the new battery terminals match the vehicle polarity requirements

Place the new battery in the tray and align it with the hold-down hardware

Install and tighten the battery hold-down clamp/strap

Connect the positive (+) terminal clamp and tighten securely

Connect the negative (-) terminal clamp and tighten securely

If applicable, reconnect any vent tube or battery accessories

Double-check that all connections are tight and cables are routed safely away from moving parts and hot surfaces

Close the hood

Start the engine and verify normal operation (charging/charging-light behavior)

If the vehicle requires it, reset driver settings (radio, clock, windows, sunroof) per owner’s manual

Dispose of the old battery at a recycling center or auto parts store
