Remove the source of the maggots (trash, rotting food, dead animals, pet waste, clogged drains, spilled liquids).
Wear gloves and use tongs or a scoop to remove visible maggots.
Place maggots and contaminated debris in a sealed bag or container and dispose immediately.
Clean the area thoroughly with hot, soapy water.
Disinfect the area with an appropriate disinfectant (follow the label instructions).
Wash and launder any affected fabrics or bedding on the hottest safe setting, then dry completely.
For drains: remove drain debris, scrub with a drain brush, then use a drain cleaner/disinfectant safe for the plumbing (follow label directions); repeat if needed.
For carpets/upholstery: remove all visible maggots, steam clean if possible, then disinfect; repeat until no larvae remain.
For outdoor areas: remove carcasses and trash promptly, clean spills, and keep bins tightly sealed.
Cover compost and keep it properly managed (avoid exposed food scraps).
Check pets: if you suspect infestation (especially around wounds), contact a veterinarian immediately.
If maggots are in a wound, seek urgent medical care or urgent veterinary care.
If the infestation is widespread or recurring, contact a licensed pest control professional.
