Apply a cold compress for 10–20 minutes at a time during the first 24–48 hours
Elevate the bruised area above heart level when possible
Rest the area and avoid further impact or strain
Use a compression bandage if appropriate and not too tight
Switch to warm compresses after 48 hours to help circulation
Take acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen in the first 24 hours if possible, since they may worsen bleeding
Eat foods rich in vitamin C and vitamin K
Stay hydrated
Gently massage the area only after the first 48 hours if it is not painful
Protect the bruise from additional injury
Seek medical care if the bruise is very large, very painful, frequent, unexplained, or not improving
