Mark out the patio area with stakes and string
Check the finished level and allow for drainage away from buildings
Remove turf, soil, and debris to the required depth
Compact the sub-base area
Add a sub-base of hardcore or MOT type 1 in layers
Compact each layer thoroughly
Add a layer of sharp sand or bedding mortar
Screed the bedding layer to a level surface
Lay the paving slabs from one corner or edge
Keep joints even and aligned
Tap each slab into place with a rubber mallet
Check levels regularly with a spirit level
Cut slabs to fit edges and corners as needed
Fill joints with jointing sand or mortar
Brush jointing material into the gaps
Compact the paving again if needed
Clean off excess material from the surface
Allow the patio to settle before heavy use
