Start with clean, dry hair (or damp hair if you prefer a smoother braid)
Detangle thoroughly with a brush or wide-tooth comb
Apply a small amount of styling product if needed (leave-in conditioner, light gel, or braid cream)
Gather hair into the style you want to braid (center part, side part, or all pulled back)
Choose your braid type (three-strand, French, Dutch, fishtail, or rope)
For a three-strand braid: split hair into three equal sections
Cross the right section over the middle, then the left section over the middle
Repeat, keeping tension even and sections consistent
Continue until you reach the ends
Secure with an elastic band or braid tie
For a French braid: split hair into three sections at the top
Braid a few passes like a regular three-strand braid
Add small sections of hair to the outer strands as you cross them into the middle
Keep adding until all hair is incorporated
Finish with a regular three-strand braid to the ends
Secure with an elastic band
For a Dutch braid: start like a French braid
Cross outer strands under the middle instead of over
Add hair to the outer strands as you braid
Finish with a regular three-strand braid
Secure with an elastic band
For a fishtail braid: divide hair into two sections
Take a small strand from the outer edge of the left section and move it to the inner edge of the right section
Take a small strand from the outer edge of the right section and move it to the inner edge of the left section
Repeat, alternating sides and keeping strands small and even
Stop when you reach the ends
Secure with an elastic band
For a rope braid: divide hair into two sections
Twist the left section clockwise (or consistently in one direction)
Twist the right section clockwise the same amount
Cross the two twisted sections by twisting them together counterclockwise
Continue twisting until you reach the ends
Secure with an elastic band
Keep tension consistent throughout to prevent uneven sections
Use a mirror setup (one front, one back) if braiding the back of your head
If braids look too tight, gently tug outward on the braid sections to loosen (optional)
Mist with hairspray or apply a light setting spray to help hold the braid
Remove elastics gently if you want to avoid hair breakage or frizz
