How To Clean Mold?

Identify the affected area and determine if it’s a small, contained spot or a large infestation

Wear PPE: gloves, eye protection, and an N95 (or better) respirator

Ventilate the area by opening windows/doors and using fans that exhaust outdoors

Fix the moisture source before cleaning (leaks, condensation, humidity)

Use detergent/cleaner and water to scrub non-porous surfaces (tile, glass, metal, sealed wood)

For non-porous surfaces, disinfect after cleaning with one of the following:

EPA-registered mold disinfectant per label directions

1 cup bleach per 1 gallon of water (if appropriate for the material)

Do not mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners

For porous materials (drywall, ceiling tiles, carpeting, insulation), remove and discard if mold is present and cannot be cleaned thoroughly

Dry all cleaned areas completely within 24–48 hours using fans/dehumidifiers

Bag and seal moldy porous materials before disposal

Clean tools and reusable equipment with detergent and disinfectant

Dispose of contaminated materials according to local regulations

Wash hands and clothing after cleanup; shower if possible

Monitor the area for recurring mold and address any ongoing moisture

Seek professional help if the area is large, the mold keeps returning, you have health concerns, or it involves HVAC systems, sewage contamination, or suspected hidden mold
