Thread a needle with embroidery floss or thread and knot the end
Bring the needle up from the back of the fabric at the starting point
Insert the needle a short distance ahead along the edge
Bring the needle back up through the fabric directly above or beside the first stitch, forming a loop
Pass the needle through the loop before pulling the thread tight
Keep each stitch evenly spaced and the same length
Repeat along the edge, always bringing the needle up through the loop
Maintain consistent tension so the stitches lie flat
Finish by making a small knot on the back of the fabric
Trim any excess thread
