Soak the foot in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Dry the foot completely after soaking
Gently lift the nail edge with clean dental floss or a small piece of cotton
Change the cotton or floss daily
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Wear roomy shoes or open-toe footwear
Trim toenails straight across, not too short
Avoid cutting the corners of the nail
Keep the toe clean and dry
Use over-the-counter pain relievers if needed
Do not dig into the nail or cut it out yourself
See a doctor if there is severe pain, swelling, pus, spreading redness, fever, or no improvement
See a doctor sooner if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
