How To Winterize Sprinklers?

Turn off the irrigation system water supply.

Open all drain valves and low-point drains.

Drain the lines by running the system until water stops flowing from drain points.

Blow out sprinkler lines using compressed air (set regulator to the manufacturer-recommended PSI).

Connect air compressor to the system via the proper blowout port/backflow preventer test cock.

Blow each zone separately until clear air and no water discharge is observed.

Close zone valves after each zone is fully drained.

Open and close test cocks/drain points as needed to fully empty risers and lateral lines.

Leave valves in the correct drained position (open where required for drainage).

Insulate exposed backflow preventers and above-ground plumbing; drain them fully.

Remove and store hose bibs, quick-couplers, and any above-ground attachments; drain thoroughly.

Shut off and drain indoor shutoff valves for irrigation lines if applicable.

Confirm sprinkler heads are fully drained (no standing water in risers).

Check for leaks and repair before winter storage.

If using irrigation controllers with battery backup, verify batteries are fresh and power is off if recommended by the manufacturer.

Cover or protect the controller and any vulnerable components if exposed to freezing temperatures.

Write down the date and method used for future reference.
