Wash the potato thoroughly and pat dry
Poke the potato all over with a fork
Rub the potato with a little oil and sprinkle lightly with salt (optional)
Place the potato on a microwave-safe plate
Microwave on high for 5 minutes
Flip the potato
Microwave for 3 to 5 more minutes, until tender (add 1 minute increments if needed)
Check doneness by inserting a knife into the thickest part; it should slide in easily
Let rest for 1 to 2 minutes
Cut a slit down the center and fluff the inside with a fork
Add toppings (butter, sour cream, cheese, chives, salt, pepper)
