Rinse rice (optional) and drain well
Add rice to a microwave-safe bowl
Add water or broth using a ratio of about 1:2 (rice:liquid)
Cover with a microwave-safe lid or vented plastic wrap
Microwave on high until water is absorbed and rice is tender (typical times: 10–15 minutes for white rice; 20–30 minutes for brown rice)
Let stand, covered, for 5–10 minutes
Fluff with a fork and serve
For white rice (quick method): use 1 cup rice + 2 cups water; microwave 10–12 minutes; stand 5 minutes
For brown rice (standard method): use 1 cup rice + 2 1/2 cups water; microwave 20–25 minutes; stand 10 minutes
For jasmine or basmati: use 1 cup rice + 1 3/4 to 2 cups water; microwave 10–15 minutes; stand 5–10 minutes
For long-grain rice: use 1 cup rice + 2 cups water; microwave 12–16 minutes; stand 5–10 minutes
Add salt to taste after cooking or before microwaving
If rice is undercooked: stir, add 1–2 tablespoons water, re-cover, microwave in 1–2 minute increments until done
If rice is overcooked or watery: uncover and microwave in 1–2 minute increments to evaporate excess moisture
