How To Replace A Garbage Disposal?

Turn off power to the garbage disposal at the breaker or switch

Verify power is off by testing the disposal switch

Disconnect the power cord (or shut off hardwired power at the junction box)

Turn off the wall switch and remove the splash guard if present

Shut off water supply to the sink if needed and clear the cabinet area

Disconnect the drain line from the disposal (loosen clamp and pull apart)

Disconnect the dishwasher drain hose from the disposal (if present)

Remove the P-trap and any additional plumbing components blocking access

Support the disposal with one hand or with a helper

Unplug or disconnect electrical wires from the disposal (black to black, white to white, green/ground to ground)

Disconnect the mounting assembly from the sink by loosening the three mounting bolts/fasteners

Lower the old disposal carefully and remove it from the mounting ring

Clean the mounting flange and sink opening; remove old putty or gasket material

Install the new mounting flange/insulation and gasket as required by the unit

Attach the mounting ring to the sink and tighten evenly

If required, install the new splash guard and any included rubber components

Lift the new disposal into position and align it with the mounting ring

Twist/lock the disposal onto the mounting ring until secure

Reconnect the dishwasher drain line using the provided elbow/connector and clamp

Reconnect the drain pipe to the disposal and tighten all clamps

Reinstall the P-trap and any removed plumbing parts; tighten connections

Connect electrical wiring: black to black, white to white, green/ground to ground

Secure the wiring with the junction box cover and strain relief

Restore power at the breaker

Run water and test the disposal switch

Check for leaks at the drain connections and dishwasher connection

If equipped, run the reset button or correct any jam before final testing

Confirm smooth operation and no unusual noises or leaks
