Soak the foot in warm water for 10–15 minutes
Dry the foot and affected nail completely
Cut the nail straight across (do not round the corners)
Trim only the amount needed to remove sharp edges
If the nail edge is digging in, lift only the very edge gently with clean, sterilized tools
Place a small piece of sterile dental floss or non-medicated gauze under the lifted edge to help it stay out of the skin
Re-check after trimming to ensure corners are not left too long
Wear clean, roomy footwear and keep the toe clean and dry
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if there’s redness or irritation
Change the floss/gauze daily if used
Do not cut down into the corners
Do not dig, pare, or remove the nail root
Do not use harsh chemicals or home “nail removal” kits
Stop and seek urgent care if there is increasing pain, swelling, pus, fever, spreading redness, or diabetes/poor circulation
