Withhold food for 12 to 24 hours if your dog is an adult and otherwise healthy
Provide small amounts of fresh water frequently
Offer an oral rehydration solution only if approved by your veterinarian
Feed a bland diet in small, frequent meals after the fasting period

Contact your veterinarian if diarrhea lasts more than 24 to 48 hours
Contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog is a puppy, senior, very small, or has other health problems
Contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog cannot keep water down or shows signs of dehydration
Contact your veterinarian immediately if there is black stool, large amounts of blood, severe pain, or collapse
Do not give human anti-diarrheal medicines unless specifically instructed by your veterinarian
Follow your veterinarian’s treatment plan if parasites, infection, or another cause is found
