Put the crib in your room for the first months
Place baby on their back for every sleep
Use a firm, flat crib mattress
Keep the crib empty except for a fitted sheet
Swaddle only if baby is not rolling and it is safe to do so
Use a sleep sack once swaddling is no longer safe
Keep the room dark and quiet
Use white noise at a low volume
Keep the room at a comfortable temperature
Feed baby before sleep
Burp baby after feeds
Put baby down when drowsy but awake
Start with one crib nap each day
Use a consistent bedtime routine
Rock, soothe, or hold baby until calm, then place in crib
Try a gentle hand on the chest after placing baby down
Wait a few minutes before responding to brief fussing
Use a pacifier if baby accepts it
Avoid loose blankets, pillows, bumpers, and toys
Keep wake windows short
Watch for sleepy cues early
Be consistent with the sleep space
Ask your pediatrician if sleep is difficult or baby seems unwell
