Follow all postoperative instructions from your surgeon
Keep the affected limb clean and moisturized
Protect the skin from cuts, burns, and insect bites
Treat any skin injury or infection promptly
Avoid blood pressure cuffs, injections, and blood draws on the affected side when possible
Avoid tight clothing, jewelry, or anything that constricts the limb
Maintain a healthy body weight
Exercise regularly with gradual, approved activity
Use the affected limb carefully during heavy lifting or repetitive strain
Elevate the limb when advised
Wear compression garments if prescribed
Learn and perform prescribed lymphatic drainage techniques if recommended
Avoid extreme heat such as hot tubs, saunas, and very hot baths
Monitor for swelling, heaviness, tightness, or skin changes
Report any early signs of lymphedema to your healthcare provider promptly
Attend all follow-up appointments and physical therapy visits
Avoid smoking
Stay hydrated and maintain good overall skin and nail care
