Mark the deck location and verify dimensions
Call utility locating services before digging
Clear the site of vegetation, debris, and obstacles
Measure and square the frame layout with stakes and string
Set the ledger board if attaching to a house, or mark freestanding support points
Dig footing holes to the required depth
Pour concrete footings or install approved footings
Install post anchors or place posts in footings as required
Cut and set support posts to height
Attach beams to posts with approved hardware
Install rim joists around the perimeter
Install interior joists at the required spacing
Use joist hangers or approved fasteners for all joist connections
Check that the frame is level, square, and properly aligned
Add blocking or bridging where required
Secure all connections with corrosion-resistant hardware
Inspect the completed frame before installing decking boards
