Measure the gate opening
Choose the gate style and wood type
Gather lumber, screws, hinges, latch, and tools
Cut the frame pieces to size
Lay out the frame on a flat surface
Assemble the outer frame
Add a diagonal brace or cross brace
Cut and attach the pickets or boards
Trim the gate edges if needed
Sand all surfaces and edges
Apply stain, paint, or sealant
Install the hinges on the gate
Attach the gate to the post
Install the latch and any stop blocks
Check alignment and adjust as needed
