How to Change a Coolant Sensor?

Disconnect the negative battery terminal

Let the engine cool completely

Locate the coolant temperature sensor

Place a drain pan under the sensor area

Drain enough coolant to lower the level below the sensor

Unplug the sensor electrical connector

Remove the sensor retaining clip or unscrew the sensor

Remove the old sensor

Install the new sensor with a new seal or O-ring if required

Tighten the sensor to the specified torque

Reconnect the electrical connector

Refill the cooling system with the correct coolant

Reinstall the radiator cap or reservoir cap

Reconnect the negative battery terminal

Start the engine and check for leaks

Verify proper engine temperature and warning light operation

Top off coolant as needed after the engine cools again
