Turn off power to the disposal
Remove any visible food debris with tongs or pliers
Rinse the disposal with cold water
Pour in ice cubes and a handful of coarse salt
Run cold water and turn on the disposal for a few seconds
Add baking soda to the disposal
Pour in white vinegar and let it foam
Rinse again with cold water
Grind small citrus peels if desired
Scrub the splash guard with a toothbrush and dish soap
Wipe the sink opening and surrounding area
Restore power to the disposal
