Use a warm, damp washcloth to clean only the outer ear
Let earwax clear naturally if it is not causing symptoms
Use over-the-counter earwax softening drops as directed on the label
Use mineral oil, baby oil, glycerin, or hydrogen peroxide drops if approved by a pharmacist or doctor
Tilt your head after using drops to let them drain out
Rinse gently with warm water using a bulb syringe only if recommended and if you have no ear problems
Stop if you feel pain, dizziness, or worsening hearing
Do not use cotton swabs inside the ear canal
Do not use hairpins, keys, or other objects to remove wax
Do not use ear candles
See a doctor if wax is impacted, symptoms persist, or you have ear pain, drainage, or hearing loss
