Rinse the broccoli and cut it into florets
Peel and slice the stem if using
Fill a skillet or saucepan with 1 to 2 inches of water
Add a pinch of salt
Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat
Add the broccoli
Cover the pan
Cook for 3 to 5 minutes until tender-crisp
Check doneness with a fork
Drain the broccoli
Season with salt, pepper, butter, olive oil, lemon juice, or garlic if desired
