Use a lighter or matches to ignite a small, dry tinder bundle
Add kindling gradually once the tinder catches
Feed the fire with larger dry fuel pieces as it grows
Keep the fire in a safe, contained area such as a fire pit
Have water, sand, or a fire extinguisher nearby
Never leave the fire unattended
Fully extinguish the fire before leaving the area
