Stop the friction immediately
Rest the foot and avoid walking long distances
Keep the blister clean and dry
Wash gently with soap and water
Do not pop an intact blister
Cover it with a hydrocolloid blister bandage
Use a padded adhesive bandage or moleskin to reduce rubbing
Change socks daily and keep feet dry
Wear roomy, comfortable shoes
Avoid shoes that caused the blister
If the blister is large or painful, drain it with a sterilized needle
Leave the blister skin in place after draining
Apply antibiotic ointment if the blister opens
Cover with a sterile nonstick dressing
Change the dressing daily or when wet
Elevate the foot if it is swollen
Use ice wrapped in cloth for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed
Watch for redness, warmth, pus, or worsening pain
Seek medical care if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or signs of infection
