Do not cut an ingrown toenail yourself if it is painful, swollen, draining, bleeding, or infected
Wash your hands and feet thoroughly
Soak the foot in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes to soften the nail
Dry the foot completely
Use clean, sterilized nail clippers
Trim the toenail straight across
Do not cut the nail too short
Do not round the corners
Do not dig into the sides of the nail
If a corner is already embedded, do not force it out with tools
Place a small piece of clean cotton or dental floss under the nail edge only if it lifts easily and does not cause pain
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Cover with a clean bandage if needed
Wear roomy shoes and avoid pressure on the toe
Seek medical care if there is pus, severe pain, spreading redness, fever, or repeated ingrown toenails
