Cut off the stem end
Leave the root end intact
Peel off the outer skin
Slice the onion in half from root to stem
Place one half flat-side down
Make horizontal cuts toward the root, stopping before the root
Make vertical cuts toward the root, stopping before the root
Cut crosswise from the stem end toward the root to create dice
Repeat with the other half
Keep the root attached until the end for stability
